M1872 Springfield Armory Cadet Sword and Scabbard. One of only 253 manufactured by the US Armory at Springfield for use at West Point. Includes notarized letter of authenticity from Burt Kellerstedt, the author of "Swords and Sabers of the Armory at Springfield". Blade is straight, double edged, 28 1/4 inches long, 1/4 inch at the ricasso tapering to 1/8 inch at the tip. Blade is plain. Cast grip that resembles wire wrap with decorative ferrules. Pommel has eagles on both sides with a scroll for a sword knot. Has straight guard with decorative eagle head quillons on each side. The center of the guard is stamped MA for Military Academy. West Point refinished cadet swords after each class graduated, and this sword shows the rounded corners and repolishing typical of multiple rebuilds. There is a number 31 stamped under the leather grommet and also a 31 stamped on the pommel. The scabbard is stamped 27 on both the throat and the drag. Scabbard throat includes stud for the frog. There is a remnant of a letter "D" on the obverse side of the ricasso. According to Mr. Kellerstedt the spacing of this letter exactly matches and is in the correct position for the word SPRINGFIELD to come ahead of it and is identical to the example in his collection. A truly rare sword missing from most collections.
