M1860 Springfield Armory Staff & Field Officer's Sword and Scabbard, circa 1892-1903. Blade is straight, double edged, measures 31 1/4" long, 5/8 inch at the ricasso tapering to 1/8 inch at the tip. Etched on the blade U.S. Springfield Armory Springfield Mass. U.S.A. with a floral design. Etched on the obverse US shield with floral design and an eagle with shield. Guard is decorated with an eagle and flags and the counter guard has a shield with cannons, rifles, and swords. Guard is stationary and not hinged. The quillon is plain. Has decorative knuckle guard with a scroll connecting to the pommel. The pommel has a sheild on the one side and an eagle on the obverse. Has two decorative ferrule, the top ferrule moves slightly as well as the grip. The grip is sharkskin wrapped with brass wire. Has nickel scabbard with two carry rings on a decorative mount at the throat and a single carry ring on a decorative mid-section mount. Has brass drag. Great Spanish-American war piece.
