M1860 Springfield Armory Staff and Field Officer's Sword and Scabbard, circa 1891-1894. Blade is straight, double edged and measures 31 inches long and 5/8 inch at the ricasso tapering to 1/8 inch at the tip. Blade is etched U.S. and Springfield Armory Springfield Mass. U.S.A. has decorative flower pot design, flags and a dress helmet. The etchings on the obverse side are floral with a US shield and an eagle with a US shield. There is some pitting on this side of the blade. The guard is an eagle with flags and the counter guard has a shield with rifles, cannons, and swords. Guard is stationary and not hinged. The quillion is plain. Has decorative knuckle guard that attaches to pommel with scroll. The pommel has a shield on the one side and an eagle on the reverse. Has two floral ferrules, the one closest to the guard slightly wiggles, but the grip is tight and does not move. Has shark skin grip wrapped with brass wire. Complete with nickel scabbard that has a double carrying ring on a decorative mount at the throat and a single carrying ring on a decorative mount at the mid-section. One throat screw is missing. The drag is brass and is stamped S.W.P on the tip.
